How to choose a natural mattress
A natural mattress is a long-term purchase, so it's worth getting right. These seven steps take you from "where do I start?" to the right mattress for you. If you'd rather talk it through, book a consultation and we'll go through each step with you.

Step 1: Start with how you sleep
Your main sleep position decides your firmness more than anything else.
| You mostly sleep on your… | Firmness to try first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Side | Soft to medium | Lets your shoulder and hip sink in so your spine stays straight |
| Back | Medium | Supports the curve of your lower back |
| Front | Medium to firm | Stops your hips sinking and arching your back |
| All of the above | Medium | The best all-rounder |
Step 2: Factor in your body weight
Heavier people sink further into any mattress, so a firmer grade often feels like a lighter person's medium. Lighter people may find firm too hard and do better one step softer. Use step 1 as your starting point and adjust from there. Body shape matters too: if your hips are wider than your shoulders, or the other way round, a zoned core (Basic Z7, Classic Orthoform or Deluxe Regulus) supports each part of you differently.
Step 3: Sharing a bed? Decide together, or don't
If you and your partner like different firmness levels, you don't have to compromise. Our Partner Solution puts two single cores under one cover, so each side has its own firmness. It costs €115 extra.
For a couple, choose at least 140 cm wide. 160 or 180 cm is more comfortable.
Step 4: Choose the right size
Our mattresses are made in European sizes, from 80 to 200 cm wide and 200 cm long. The most popular are 90 × 200, 140 × 200, 160 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm. These are not the same as Irish sizes. A 140 × 200 is slightly bigger than an Irish 4'6" double. See our mattress size guide before you order, especially if you're keeping your current bed frame.
Step 5: Pick your cover
The cover is the part you touch, and it decides how you clean the mattress.
- Wool-quilted covers (organic cotton with virgin wool): warm, breathable and good at managing moisture. Dry-clean only.
- Washable covers (WB1, WB2 and Hemp Knit Washable): can be removed and washed at 60°C. A good choice if you have allergies, young children or pets, or prefer not to use wool.
Step 6: Don't forget what's underneath
A natural latex mattress needs to breathe from below, so we recommend a slatted base rather than a solid board or the floor. See all our slatted frames.
- Roll-up slats from €180 (90 × 200): simple and affordable.
- Sprung Basic S slatted base from €420 (90 × 200): flexible slats that work with the mattress.
- Solid wood beds from €1,010 (90 × 200): heartwood beech, oak, Swiss pine, cherry or walnut, made to the same sizes as the mattresses.
A good base can make a mattress feel noticeably different, so try the two together if you can.
Step 7: Set your budget, then compare ranges
All four ranges use 100% natural latex. As you go up, you get more latex, a deeper mattress and more cover choices.
| Range | Depth | Best for | From (90 × 200) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Eco | 14 cm | Guest rooms, children, tight budgets. Made from natural latex offcuts bonded back together, so nothing is wasted | €950 |
| Natural Basic | 16 cm | Everyday main-bedroom mattress, four constructions | €1,205 |
| Natural Classic | 18 cm | More latex and five cover options, including washable hemp | €1,665 |
| Natural Deluxe | 23 cm | The deepest and most luxurious, up to 20 cm of latex, with a star-quilted cover option | €2,445 |

Before you buy: try it
Firmness is personal, and words only go so far. The best test is to lie on a mattress for ten minutes in your usual sleep position.

Questions
Frequently asked
What firmness is best for back pain?
There's no single answer. Medium is the most common starting point, because it supports the lower back without being hard. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor or physiotherapist too.
How long does a natural latex mattress last?
Natural latex is resilient and keeps its shape well. One of our customers wrote that theirs was still as new after ten years. Ask us about care and the guarantee on the model you choose.
Is a natural mattress worth the extra cost?
If you sleep hot, want to avoid synthetic foams, or plan to keep your mattress for many years, many people find it is. Talk it through with us and decide for yourself.
