Mattress sizes in Ireland: Irish vs European sizes explained
Irish beds and mattresses use different sizes from the rest of Europe. Irish sizes are measured in feet and are mostly 190 cm long. European (continental) sizes are mostly 200 cm long. A 140 × 200 cm European double is not the same as an Irish 4'6" double, and they don't swap.
Our mattresses and beds are made in Germany, so they come in European sizes. This guide shows you which size to choose and what else changes.

Irish and European sizes compared
| Irish name | Irish size (cm) | Nearest European size (cm) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single (3ft) | 90 × 190 | 90 × 200 | 10 cm longer |
| Small double (4ft) | 120 × 190 | 120 × 200 | 10 cm longer |
| Double (4ft 6in) | 135 × 190 | 140 × 200 | 5 cm wider, 10 cm longer |
| King (5ft) | 150 × 200 | 160 × 200 | 10 cm wider |
| Super king (6ft) | 180 × 200 | 180 × 200 | Same |
Our mattresses are made in 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180 and 200 cm widths, all 200 cm long. The most popular are 90 × 200, 140 × 200, 160 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm.
Why the extra length is worth having
Most adults are comfortable on a 200 cm mattress. If you're taller than about 180 cm, the extra 10 cm compared with an Irish 190 cm bed makes a real difference: your feet stay on the mattress and your pillow doesn't push into the headboard.
Most of our solid wood beds can also be made 190, 210 or 220 cm long for a 10–15% surcharge, so very tall sleepers can go longer still. KB_23 only comes in 200 cm, and the modular beds (Arive, Mira and Soreo) have their own price for longer lengths.
Mattress and bed frame must match
A European mattress needs a European-sized bed frame. A 140 × 200 cm mattress won't fit inside an Irish 4'6" frame, and a 135 × 190 cm Irish mattress will leave gaps in a European frame.
You have two options:
- Buy the bed and mattress together. Our solid wood beds and slatted bases are made to the same European sizes as our mattresses.
- Keep your existing frame. Measure the inside of it and ask us about a made-to-measure mattress. Dormiente can make mattresses 190, 210 or 220 cm long and in in-between widths, such as an Irish 135 × 190 cm double, for a surcharge. We'll quote you the exact price.
One note on slatted bases: a single slatted base goes up to 140 cm wide, so wider beds (160 and 180 cm) use two bases side by side.
What about sheets and duvets?
- Fitted sheets. An Irish double fitted sheet (135 × 190) will be too small for a 140 × 200 mattress. Buy fitted sheets in European sizes. Our organic cotton fitted sheets come in widths of 90/100, 140/160 and 180/200 cm, 200 or 220 cm long, and fit mattresses up to 28 cm deep.
- Duvets. Duvet sizes are less fussy. Our natural duvets range from 135 × 200 to 200 × 220 cm.
- Mattress depth. Our mattresses are 14–23 cm deep depending on the range, so standard-depth fitted sheets fit well.
How to measure your room
- Measure the room's length and width.
- Add about 15–25 cm to the mattress size to allow for the bed frame (it depends on the design).
- Leave at least 60 cm of walking space on the sides you get out of bed.
- If two people share the bed, each person needs at least 70 cm of mattress width. That means 140 cm is the minimum for a couple, and 160 or 180 cm is more comfortable.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is a 140 × 200 mattress a double or a king?
It's a European double. It is slightly bigger than an Irish 4'6" double (135 × 190), but smaller than an Irish 5ft king (150 × 200).
Can I put a European mattress on my Irish bed?
Usually not. The sizes differ by 5–10 cm, so it either won't fit or will leave gaps. Buy the bed and mattress together, or ask about a made-to-measure size.
What size is a super king in Ireland?
180 × 200 cm, the same as the European size. It's the one size that matches.
Can two people with different firmness preferences share one mattress?
Yes. Our Partner Solution puts two single cores under one cover, so each side can have its own firmness. It adds €115.
Do you deliver everywhere in Ireland?
Yes. Delivery and assembly are included in the price anywhere in Ireland. Allow 6–8 weeks, because each piece is made to order.
